Cowboy Reckoning was my first attempt at serious world building. Creating distinct cultures & fictional history is something I’ve always enjoyed. This project was extra special because my grandfather was involved in production and appears on screen.
This proof of concept was shot on 16mm film reverse stock and cross processed which added to the gritty feel. Now, we’d shoot it clean and add the effects in post. The money spent on film stock and processing would have been used elsewhere. Likely, production design. The camera was so loud we had to build a “camera cube” around it so as not to ruin the sound. Celluloid is magical, but I don’t miss it when shooting on a tight budget.
